Mike Serio Bursary

As past president of the Scarborough Sharks Girls Hockey Association over the 1990s, Mike Serio was a champion of girl's hockey in Scarborough during many of its formative years.  Under his leadership, the Sharks hockey league grew from 60 girls to over 500 girls today. In 2003, the Mike Serio Bursary was established in recognition of Mike's contributions to the league.

The bursary, valued at $750, provides players with financial assistance towards their first year of post-secondary education. Two bursaries are awarded each year - one to a current rep player and one to a current house league player. Players must be currently registered with the Scarborough Sharks and played a minimum of two years with the organization in order to apply.

Interested candidates should apply in writing (maximum one page) indicating why they deserve to be awarded the bursary. Two reference letters should also accompany the application.

The following criteria will be used by the selection committee to assess applications:

  • volunteer contributions to the league;
  • other volunteer or community experience;
  • any special academic achievements, and/or school involvement;
  • future career aspirations;
  • personal characteristics which might provide insight into an applicant's character

Letters should be sent to the leagues Communications Director via e-mail:

[email protected]

Submission deadline is March 17, 2024.

The Sharks Executive will review all submissions and the winners will be announced before the end of season.
