Robert Horst
I am lifetime hockey
player and fan. I discovered hockey at the age of 5 and had a long run in the Scarborough
Hockey Association (SHA). 40+ years later, I am still lucky enough to play every
week. I am thrilled to coach and help spread the joy of hockey to a new
generation of kids including my own, Annabel (2013) and David (2014).
I’ve been involved in
Coaching hockey for almost 10 years including:
U7-U9 Boys – Tier 2
U9B – Scarborough
Sharks (Head Coach)
U11A – Scarborough
Sharks (Head Coach/Assistant Coach)
U11AA Boys –
Scarborough Young Bruins (Assistant Coach)
U12AA Boys –
Scarborough Young Bruins (Assistant Coach)
First and foremost, I
am in this for the kids. I believe that team sports are an opportunity for kids
to learn lessons that will last them a lifetime. Coaches have a responsibility
to help kids improve both their athletic abilities and their character. On the ice you can expect me to have an energetic,
positive and encouraging style with our players to help them reach their potential.
On the bench, you can expect me to be passionate but controlled. With parents
and coaching staff, you can expect me to listen to and respect your feedback. Winning
is a by-product of good culture.
The Coaching
Philosophy for the team will focus on :
1)
Having Fun. Kids learn more when they want to be there.
2)
Skill Development. Competence builds confidence.
3)
Teamwork. We are all in this together. Parents, Coaches, Kids.
4)
Commitment to Excellence. Always show up and Always try your
best.
5)
Compete!
In 2026/2027 we will
be running an A program for Scarborough Sharks that will require hard work,
discipline and commitment. It will include being on ice 3-4 times per week. We
will include a combination of individual skill paid coaches, dryland fitness
and regular team skills/systems in practice. Our staff will include assistant
coaches who have played high level hockey and understand hockey strategy.
Our budget will
include paid skills coaches and pre-season training. We will also budget for at
least one out of town tournament and 2-3 local tournaments.
